Kangaroos winger Josh Addo-Carr has been dismissed by the Canterbury Bulldogs effective immediately following two positive roadside drug tests last month. The decision was reached after Addo-Carr met with the club’s board on Thursday night, where Bulldogs chairman Adam Driussi emphasized the thoughtful consideration that went into this choice.
Driussi noted, “Josh has been a significant part of our club over the past three seasons” and acknowledged the many memorable moments he has brought to fans and members. He expressed understanding regarding the disappointment felt by Addo-Carr’s supporters, but underscored the critical need to foster a culture built on clear standards and values within the team.
While the NRL Integrity Unit has completed its investigation and imposed a four-match suspension, the Bulldogs deemed Addo-Carr’s combination of failed drug tests and subsequent lack of transparency as serious violations of both his contractual obligations and the club’s established standards.
The chairman stated that the club prioritizes player support through extensive welfare programs, which extend beyond just football. However, he made it clear that effective support can only continue with complete trust and transparency from the players.
In a show of solidarity, Driussi conveyed well-wishes for Josh and his family, affirming that the club’s welfare team remains at the ready to assist them during this challenging transition.
In other league news, star fullback Reece Walsh has signed a four-year contract extension with the Brisbane Broncos, securing his position until the end of the 2029 season. Meanwhile, former Chiefs hooker Tyrone Thompson is set to switch codes and join his twin brother Leo at the Newcastle Knights in the upcoming season, having previously represented the All Blacks XV and Māori All Blacks in 2022.
This situation highlights the ongoing importance of integrity within sports, emphasizing that accountability is essential for maintaining a positive culture among players. It is hopeful that Addo-Carr will take this as an opportunity to grow personally and professionally, learning from this experience as he moves on to the next chapter of his career.
