Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the Pacific Bowl Championship, as announced over the weekend by head coach Joe Rabele.
Rabele shared that the team scouted players in Australia, culminating in the selection of eight talents, including Lutu, who has made a name for herself playing for the Wests Tigers.
Originally from Suva and a product of the Campbelltown Juniors, Lutu has made significant strides within the Wests Tigers system in recent years. She is known for her dynamic running style and had a standout season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ success in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping Wests Tigers secure their first title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. Lutu is under contract with the club until the end of the 2026 season.
In preparation for the upcoming clash against the Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele emphasized the importance of selecting the best possible player combination. He mentioned ongoing observations of local competitions to scout additional talents.
Rabele, who previously led the Fiji Bati to a semi-final appearance in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup, noted that he already has a roster of 35 players in consideration, pending NRL approval for player eligibility. He acknowledged the need to enhance the local competition level.
“This qualifier is crucial for us,” he stated. Rabele is focused on the mission to secure a spot in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, knowing that strategic decisions are essential for the qualifiers ahead.
He indicated that half of the squad will comprise locally-based players. Rabele reflected on the drawback of Fiji Bulikula’s absence from last year’s World Cup, remarking on the current opportunity to identify and develop talent. He is optimistic about the upcoming squad, highlighting the blend of experience and youth in the team.
