Beyond the headline

Since the opening round of the OFC Professional League, Bula FC has maintained a clear season strategy: prioritise player development even as results on the pitch lag behind some rivals. Head coach Stéphane Auvray reiterated that approach this week, saying the club will continue to focus on building experience and improving individual performance before making a full push for points.

Auvray acknowledged that the team has recorded more losses than wins so far in the campaign but said he is nevertheless encouraged by the progress he has seen across the squad. “There will be a time when it is important for us to get the points, it’s getting close, but at the moment, our focus is still the development of our players,” he said, adding that once the side has accumulated sufficient elite-level experience the emphasis will shift more decisively toward winning matches.

The coach’s comments come after Bula FC’s hard-fought first OFC Pro League victory in early February, when captain Roy Krishna helped steer the side to a 1-0 win over Solomon Kings in Port Moresby. That result — achieved despite the team finishing the match with ten men — offered a glimpse of the defensive resilience and leadership Auvray is trying to cultivate, but has not altered the club’s short-term priorities.

Bula FC’s approach mirrors a longer-term development model that favours giving younger players exposure to elite competition rather than prioritising short-term results. Auvray’s message is that accumulating high-level minutes and learning to handle the tactical and physical demands of the Pro League will, in time, translate into more consistent victories. The coach framed the current phase as necessary groundwork for sustainable competitiveness.

For supporters and stakeholders, the immediate implication is patience. While rivals concentrating on points may rise more quickly in the standings, Bula FC’s management has signalled that the club values building a stable pipeline of talent capable of competing at the top of the region in coming seasons. That stance could influence selection decisions and match tactics over the remainder of the campaign, with more opportunities likely for developing players even in tightly contested fixtures.

As the OFC Professional League season progresses, the point at which Auvray says the team will pivot toward a results-first mentality is likely to be judged by accumulated experience rather than a fixed date. For now, Bula FC remains measured in its ambitions: securing points when possible, but treating this season as a classroom for growth that the coach believes will pay dividends once the squad’s collective experience reaches elite standards.
