Beyond the headline

Bula FC’s extra head coach Stéphane Auvray has downplayed the significance of the club’s climb into the top three of the OFC Pro League table, insisting the team’s priority is building a clear identity and consistent performances as it prepares to return to Fiji for the final round of matches this month.

The upbeat league position comes off a string of results that have lifted the side up the standings, but Auvray said Tuesday the numbers on the table are secondary to what the squad is becoming on the pitch. “What we wanted when we get home is to have some certainties on how we play, what we do and what we can offer to our fans,” he said, framing the current phase as one of consolidation rather than celebration.

Auvray told reporters the coaching staff are concentrating on defining the team’s strengths and habits — a process he believes is underway even as the club continues to learn. “We have many of those now. We will still make some mistakes and may not always have the best games, but as long as we know what we’re good at, we will try to do it as best as possible,” he said. The coach emphasised that knowing and executing a clear game plan will matter more over the long run than short-term table position.

Auvray also made clear the return to Fiji is an opportunity to demonstrate progress directly to supporters. “The priority is that when we come back, our fans can see where we’re at compared to where we started, and hopefully we can give them a lot of emotions as well,” he said, underlining the role of home crowds in the final round. Bula FC will host the concluding fixtures of their OFC Pro League campaign in Fiji later this month, giving local supporters a final look at the team’s evolution this season.

The coach’s remarks follow encouraging signs on the pitch for Bula FC. The club registered its first OFC Pro League victory earlier in the campaign — a 1-0 win over Solomon Kings in Port Moresby — an outcome that captain Roy Krishna said at the time brought cautious optimism but reinforced the need for continued focus. Auvray’s message appears aimed at balancing the morale boost from recent results with the hard work still required to shape a recognisable playing style.

With the final round looming, Auvray indicated the staff will continue to prioritise training on the fundamentals they want to be known for, even if that means accepting imperfect results in the short term as part of a larger process. The emphasis on identity and repeatable processes could prove decisive in how Bula FC perform at home, where expectations from fans will be amplified by the proximity of the club’s progress to the supporters who have followed them all season.

As Bula FC shifts its attention to preparations for the Fiji fixtures, Auvray’s comments frame the closing chapter of the team’s campaign as less about immediate rankings and more about leaving a lasting impression on the squad and its fanbase — showing tangible development from the team’s starting point and building momentum for the future.
