The journey to the OFC Professional League has officially commenced for Bula FC with the landmark signing of their inaugural player, Gabiriele Matanisiga. The 30-year-old Fijian International is transitioning to the club from Rewa FC, where he thrived as a center back. This pivotal move signifies a new beginning not only for Matanisiga but also for Bula FC.
Matanisiga, a native of Nukubalavu, comes equipped with a wealth of experience, boasting 18 international caps, complemented by his successful stint with Wellington Olympic. His performance this season has been exemplary, with his defensive prowess playing a crucial role in Rewa FC’s strong 2025 campaign. His significant contributions earned him the “Player of the Match” accolade at the FMF IDC tournament, as well as the Golden Boot award during the 2025 Pacific Community Cup, showcasing his talent and potential in the upcoming OFC Professional League with Bula FC.
Born into a challenging environment, Matanisiga’s football journey began amidst the cane fields. As the eldest sibling, he made the tough decision to leave school early to support his family as a canecutter. Despite his circumstances, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of a football career. “I dropped out of school as the eldest to help my sibling chase their careers while training in between,” he reflected. “But God heard me. He answers our cries and feels our hearts.”
Matanisiga’s perspective on his journey reinforces the belief that “difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.” His dream of becoming a professional footballer is now materializing with this significant signing, marking him as a trailblazer for Bula FC.
As Bula FC moves forward, they are expected to unveil more signings in the coming days as they gear up for their preseason preparations. Notably, Rewa FC’s Delon Shankar and Josaia Sela have also joined the newly formed franchise, with their signings announced recently. This influx of talent signals an exciting future for Bula FC as they embark on their inaugural season in the OFC Pro League.
