The Digicel Bula Boys will focus on the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month, according to captain Roy Krishna. Despite a less-than-stellar performance in the Tri-Nations Friendlies, where they drew 1-1 with Hong Kong-China, Krishna believes there is still ample work to do ahead of the qualifiers.
Krishna expressed pride in the team’s performance during the friendly against Hong Kong and highlighted the significance of the upcoming World Cup Qualification matches. He is optimistic that the players will return fit and injury-free, ready to compete at a higher level.
Reflecting on his own situation, Krishna noted the long journey back to India before the new season begins. He emphasized, “For the team, our next big match is the World Cup Qualification next month. We really need to start working from now; that’s the more important one. Hopefully, these boys will be fit, injury-free, and come back stronger.”
Head coach Rob Sherman also expressed confidence, stating that the team is in a good position to build on the experience gained from the recent friendlies. They are eagerly anticipating their first pool match against the Solomon Islands in October.
The World Cup Qualifiers will take place in Suva, with Group A matches scheduled for October 10, featuring fixtures between Solomon Islands and Fiji, and New Caledonia versus Papua New Guinea. In Port Vila, Group B will see New Zealand face Tahiti on October 11 and Vanuatu take on the winner of Round One on October 12.
