Fiji’s national football team, popularly known as the Bula Boys, is preparing for the King’s Cup tournament in Thailand next month. Head coach Marika Rodu has announced a 25-member extended squad, who will gather for a training camp starting on August 17 at the FFA Academy in Ba. The squad will ultimately be narrowed down to 21 players for the tournament.

In this competition, Fiji will face strong opponents: the host nation Thailand, Iraq, and Hong Kong. This provides the Bula Boys with a crucial opportunity to gain valuable international experience as they build towards future competitions, including upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Two players have received their first senior call-ups: Labasa goalkeeper Jitoko Vulava and 17-year-old striker Veleni Rasorewa, who has impressed during his time with the Fiji U-17 team. Unfortunately, the camp will be missing some key figures. Rewa midfielder Setareki Hughes is unavailable due to family commitments, Suva goalkeeper Akuila Mataisuva has work obligations, and team captain Roy Krishna is recovering from an injury.

Coach Rodu emphasized that the selection strategy is aimed at fostering younger talent in preparation for future competitions, signaling a commitment to long-term success by allowing veterans to pass the torch to the next generation. The squad includes four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, six midfielders, and five strikers. Notable overseas-based players include defender Sterling Vasconcellos and midfielder Thomas Dunn, both from Eastern Suburbs in New Zealand.

Fans remain hopeful as the Bula Boys head into this tournament, eager to witness the team grow and thrive on the international stage. The team’s departure for Thailand is scheduled for early September, where they will take on Asia’s top sides with the aim of generating momentum for their global aspirations.

This commitment to developing young players alongside seasoned athletes reflects a balanced approach that could bode well for the future of Fijian football.
