The Fiji national football team, commonly known as the Bula Boys, is ramping up its preparations for the crucial semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against New Zealand. The team is currently undergoing training at the Ba Academy, focusing on refining tactics, building team chemistry, and assessing player fitness.

This initial phase of training incorporates a blend of local talent and overseas-based trialists, which is critical for identifying the strongest squad as they prepare for fierce competition. Team manager Kartik Reddy expressed satisfaction with the progress of the camp, indicating a robust environment for player development.

As the team gears up for the qualifiers, emphasis is placed on both tactical and technical training, along with physical conditioning to ready the players for the high-stakes match scheduled for March 21 in Wellington. After this initial camp, selected players will move to Auckland, where they’ll join New Zealand-based teammates. The final squad of 23 players will be announced on March 1.

Upcoming friendly matches against Auckland United, Eastern Suburbs, and Wellington Phoenix are deemed essential for testing the team’s execution of strategies against organized opposition. “These build-up games will allow us to observe how well our players implement our game plans,” Reddy said, acknowledging the challenges posed by competing against professional sides like New Zealand’s All Whites.

Despite being largely an amateur ensemble, the Fijian players are motivated, participating in team-building exercises to foster unity. With the prospect of World Cup qualification at stake, the Bula Boys are focused on making a significant impact on the Oceania football scene.

The inclusion of both local and international players reflects a strategic approach to enhance the team’s competitiveness, and as they prepare for this pivotal challenge, there is optimism in the air. The energy within the camp suggests a strong commitment to the journey ahead, promising an exciting match for fans and players alike.
