The Hydro Bukuya rugby sevens team achieved a remarkable victory in the Bowl Final of the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, triumphing over Saint John Lomary with a score of 15-12. This match took place at the Vatulele District School grounds. Despite lacking adequate training equipment and the absence of their village supporters, the team demonstrated resilience and determination.
The team, named after their hydro power source, traveled to Vatulele for the two-day event, leaving their family and friends back in Bukuya, Magodro, Ba. After their victory, team manager Vereti Malasebe expressed gratitude towards their faith, acknowledging that their success was made possible through perseverance in the face of adversity. He shared that their training lacked proper resources, relying only on a few cones and rugby balls as the majority of the equipment was unavailable to them.
Looking forward, the team is optimistic about participating in upcoming tournaments in the new year, particularly the Coral Coast 7s.
