The Hydro Bukuya rugby sevens team triumphed in the Bowl Final of the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, defeating Saint John Lomary 15-12, despite lacking proper training equipment. The match took place at the Vatulele District School ground. The team, which draws its name from hydro power, traveled to Vatulele without supporters or adequate training materials, as their families stayed behind in their village of Bukuya, Magodro, Ba.

Team manager Vereti Malasebe expressed gratitude for their victory, emphasizing their reliance on faith. “There was no one at all (from Bukuya) to come and support us,” Malasebe noted, highlighting the challenges they faced. Without proper training gear or facilities—only basic cones and a few rugby balls—they managed to achieve success against better-prepared opponents.

Looking forward, the team is optimistic about future tournaments, including the Coral Coast 7s scheduled for the new year, demonstrating their determination to continue competing despite the odds.

This story brings a hopeful message about resilience and the spirit of teamwork. The Hydro Bukuya team serves as an inspiring example of how dedication and faith can lead to success even in difficult circumstances. Their journey reflects the broader theme of perseverance in sports, encouraging others to pursue their goals, regardless of obstacles.
