The Hydro Bukuya rugby sevens team showcased remarkable determination and resilience at the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, where they clinched the Bowl Final by defeating Saint John Lomary 15-12 at the Vatulele District School ground. Despite lacking proper training equipment and having no supporters from their village of Bukuya, the team’s spirit was unwavering.
The team, which draws its name from its hydro power source, arrived in Vatulele for the two-day event without any of their families. Team manager Vereti Malasebe expressed immense gratitude to the Lord for their victory, highlighting the challenges they faced during training. “We had no proper equipment or mattresses and only a handful of cones and rugby balls, while other teams brought much more advanced resources,” Malasebe noted.
Their triumph serves as a source of inspiration, exemplifying that with faith, teamwork, and perseverance, success can be achieved even under adverse circumstances. As the Hydro Bukuya team sets its sights on upcoming tournaments in the new year, including the Coral Coast 7s, they carry with them not only a trophy but also the message that dedication and hard work pay off.
This victory not only represents a personal achievement for the team but also stands as a testament to the spirit of community and the pursuit of dreams against all odds.
