A significant development took place in Maumi Village, Dravo, Tailevu, where a groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 26, 2025, for a new multi-purpose evacuation center. The event was officiated by Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.

Minister Ditoka underscored the importance of this evacuation center, stating its design caters to vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. The center aims to provide not only shelter during natural disasters but also a space for community business incubation, contributing to local development.

He expressed heartfelt thanks to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Korea for their financial support, noting that the facility is part of a wider initiative to boost disaster resilience in the region. The center will offer crucial training in disaster management, in collaboration with IOM, and will also focus on enhancing the safety of women and children through programs led by Save the Children.

The project, with a total investment of $739,000, is designed to benefit not just the residents of Maumi but neighboring communities as well, creating a sustainable legacy of safety and support against future natural disasters and climate change impacts.

This initiative aligns closely with recent activities, such as the inauguration of the Yavusania Retrofitted Evacuation Centre in Nadi, which was also funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and is aimed at enhancing disaster resilience within vulnerable communities in Fiji. Both projects highlight the proactive measures being implemented to ensure community preparedness and support in the face of climate threats.

The establishment of such facilities is a promising step toward fostering safer and more resilient communities, demonstrating a commitment to protect those most at risk during emergencies while also nurturing economic and social development.
