Minister Ditoka's Northern Visit: A Beacon of Hope After Cyclone Rae

“Building Resilience: Minister’s Visit Sparks Hope After Cyclone”

The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi R. Ditoka, has initiated a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the government’s response to Tropical Cyclone Rae and oversee significant development initiatives in the region. Recent evaluations indicate that while the cyclone presented potential risks, it mostly spared the area from severe damage, with only minor localized flooding reported.

During his visit, Ditoka, accompanied by Assistant Minister Jovesa Vocea, engaged with Commissioner Northern, Mr. Uraia Rainima, to receive updates on the ongoing recovery efforts in cyclone-impacted communities and review crucial infrastructure projects aimed at fostering economic growth. Key sites included the newly constructed Waiqele Airport Terminal and accommodation facilities under construction at the Damodar complex in Labasa, as well as important infrastructure enhancements in Nasealevu, Macuata.

Ditoka acknowledged the hard work of government officials involved in the recovery process, underscoring the significance of these projects for strengthening the economic resilience of the northern region. This proactive strategy toward disaster management reflects the government’s persistent commitment to aiding communities in facing challenges, similar to earlier rehabilitation initiatives following natural disasters.

Despite the increasingly severe weather challenges, community resilience shines through as local authorities mobilize resources to foster recovery efforts. Ongoing infrastructure assessments and improvements are crucial for a swift return to normal life and safety for affected residents.

The minister’s visit illustrates a collaborative and positive response to recent disasters, underlining community resilience and the government’s dedication to developing sustainable solutions for future adversities. This focus on infrastructure and recovery positions the Northern Division for greater stability and economic growth moving forward.
