Disasters impact all communities regardless of their circumstances, as highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, during the opening address at the Disaster Risk Resilience Scorecard Workshop for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Suva.

Gavoka emphasized the far-reaching effects of disasters, noting that they disrupt not only communities but also vital infrastructure and industries. He remarked, “As we work to fortify homes and protect livelihoods, we also protect the resources and systems that underpin sectors like tourism.” The ability to recover quickly from crises is essential for safeguarding not only industries but also the countless lives they support.

The Deputy Prime Minister underscored the importance of the workshop in enhancing Fiji’s capacity to address challenges while maintaining its reputation as a safe and attractive destination for visitors. He encouraged participants to engage in meaningful discussions over the next three days on topics relevant to the Sendai Framework, identify existing gaps, and formulate actionable strategies utilizing the Disaster Resilience Scorecard for SIDS.

Gavoka stated, “This workshop is an opportunity to shape policies that protect our people, strengthen our infrastructure, and safeguard our environment.” The contributions made during this event will provide a foundation for safeguarding livelihoods, preserving essential industries, and protecting communities.

Attendees included representatives from the Disaster Management office, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), Excelsia University College, and the Global Development College, among others, highlighting a collaborative effort to address disaster resilience.

This workshop not only emphasizes the importance of disaster preparedness but also embodies hope for a more resilient future for vulnerable nations facing environmental challenges.

In summary, the workshop serves as a platform for strengthening disaster resilience in Fiji and other small island nations, facilitating dialogue and collaboration for effective policy-making to protect communities and industries from the impacts of disasters.
