The first disaster management workshop for Blue Pacific Continents commenced their weeklong event yesterday morning at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Conference Centre.
Chief Operating Officer for World Vision South Asia Pacific regional office, Sarah Bearup, emphasized the importance of locally led initiatives in humanitarian and development work.
“We have nine countries represented, which includes some of our World Vision local staff as well as a number of local partners,” she said. “We’re really bringing a whole group together this week.”
Ms. Bearup added that their aim is to enhance the existing humanitarian ecosystem.
“Strengthening capacity, particularly around disaster management, means building up those skills and tools needed to respond to disasters,” she said. “Whether it be preparedness, mitigation, addressing environmental impacts, the rights of people amidst disasters, and ensuring dignified and effective responses to disasters.”
The workshop is scheduled to take place over five days.
