FIJI National University’s (FNU) head of construction, Viliame Sakiti, has introduced a promising solution to Fiji’s affordable housing crisis through the development of a sustainable mud block. Recognized with the Vice Chancellor’s Special Award for his innovation, Mr. Sakiti advocates for the use of locally sourced, green materials as a key strategy for overcoming housing challenges in Fiji.

Mr. Sakiti explains that the skyrocketing prices of houses—rising from $50,000 a decade ago to around $150,000 now—are mainly due to the scarcity and costliness of imported building materials, which currently account for about 95% of Fiji’s construction supplies. His focus on reducing reliance on imports includes eco-friendly alternatives such as low-carbon cement and plastic polymers, along with his award-winning mud brick, which he claims offers greater strength and insulation at a reduced cost.

His laboratory-tested mud brick reportedly exhibits a strength of 23 MPa, significantly higher than the typical 12 MPa of usual blocks. He has constructed a prototype home using this new material, projecting that a two to three-bedroom house would cost between $40,000 and $60,000, indicating a substantial reduction in construction costs compared to conventional methods.

Mr. Sakiti believes his innovation could profoundly benefit informal settlements and low-income earners, presenting them with an affordable path to homeownership. “This is achievable for individuals earning between $10,000 to $50,000 annually,” he stated, emphasizing that the material boasts strong thermal performance and sustainability, allowing it to utilize what is already available in the community.

This innovative approach aligns with broader government initiatives aimed at addressing housing affordability in Fiji. Recently, the Minister for Housing emphasized the pressing need for innovative construction methods to lower costs and expedite building processes. Consistent with Mr. Sakiti’s efforts, the government is committed to enhancing housing accessibility, focusing on the development of affordable, climate-resilient housing solutions.

As the Fijian government, along with private sector partners, works towards creating sustainable housing solutions, Mr. Sakiti’s approach offers a hopeful glimpse into a future where safe, affordable homes are within reach for all Fijians. This commitment to collaboration and innovation signals a positive trajectory towards addressing one of the nation’s most pressing social challenges.
