Seventeen Japanese investors are currently in Fiji participating in the Pacific and Japan Regional Investment Seminar held at the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat in Suva.

Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, stated that the seminar emphasizes collaboration and opportunities aimed at fostering growth throughout the region.

“The goal of the seminar is to enhance Japan’s cooperation with Forum Island countries and to facilitate the initiation of tangible projects as a result of this gathering,” Ali remarked.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, emphasized that Japan and the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are united by a shared vision and commitment to achieving environmentally sustainable and resilient economic growth that would enhance the social and economic well-being of the Pacific populace.

“This vision was reaffirmed by the leaders of the Pacific Island Countries and Japan during the PALM 10 meeting held in Japan this past July,” he stated.

“Such resolute commitments from our leaders have laid the groundwork for Japan’s multilateral and bilateral cooperation with its Pacific family of nations,” he added.

The seminar aims to bolster regional cooperation and integration through trade, investment, tourism, and the development of local industries including agriculture, forestry, and fisheries.

“While Japanese companies equipped with advanced technology hold significant potential for engaging in business ventures in the Pacific, forming a network with Pacific Island governments and the private sector can prove to be challenging,” Michii noted.

“This seminar serves as a platform to build such networks and importantly offers a safe environment for the Pacific private sector to explore Japanese technologies and comprehend their applicability to various socio-economic challenges faced by the countries in the region,” he concluded.
