China’s ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, urged the Chinese community in Fiji to enhance their contributions to the nation’s development. Speaking at a celebration for the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day in Suva, Mr. Zhou reflected on the historical arrival of Chinese people in Fiji and their ongoing role in nation-building.
He noted that Chinese ancestors began arriving in Fiji in 1855 and emphasized the strong bonds formed with the Fijian people over nearly 170 years, highlighting their contributions to the country’s economic and social growth. Next year marks two significant anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji, and the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement in Fiji.
During his address, Mr. Zhou encouraged the community to love their host country while remembering their origins, urging them to embody virtues like diligence and unity as they engage with all ethnic groups in Fiji to continue contributing to the nation’s progress.
In line with the Mid-Autumn Festival’s themes of harvest and family, Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere acknowledged the vital role of Chinese farmers in enhancing Fiji’s food security and agricultural sector. He praised the Chinese farming community for their essential work in producing local food crops and fostering domestic agricultural exports.
Jenny Seeto, the President of the Chinese Association of Fiji, remarked on the significance of the upcoming 170th anniversary of the first Chinese arrivals in Fiji, stressing the community’s vibrant presence and its critical role in shaping Fiji’s social and economic landscape.
