Building Bridges: A Call for Respect in Coalition Politics

Professor Biman Prasad, the leader of the National Federation Party, has expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, highlighting his friendship and fairness. During the Party Convention held in Sigatoka today, Prasad noted the Prime Minister’s consistent support during his personal challenges within the government.

He remarked, “This is leadership that promises a positive future for both our Government and our nation as we aim to enhance our governance.” He acknowledged the enduring solidarity and support that has characterized their political partnership, which began prior to their assumption of government roles.

Prasad recognized the difficulties inherent in coalition politics, acknowledging that there are disagreements between the three parties involved, sometimes voiced publicly. He stated, “We anticipate this. Each of us is in politics for various reasons and represents distinct groups with different priorities. However, even amidst public disagreement, there is mutual respect among us. We are all democrats who openly share our perspectives.”

He emphasized the importance of respecting one another’s opinions in a coalition government, stating, “We do not always have things our way, but in politics, particularly within a Coalition Government, respecting your partners and their viewpoints is crucial. Respect fosters trust. After years of governance marked by a lack of trust, we are working on rebuilding that trust in our country.”
