Two hundred and fifty climate-resilient model homes are set to be constructed in Nepani, Nasinu, by the end of 2025. This significant initiative, launched by the Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, aims to provide affordable, durable, and sustainable housing options for Fijian families, while also focusing on reducing construction time and enhancing structural integrity.

During the launch event, Minister Nalumisa stressed that the model homes initiative reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development within the housing sector. He stated, “This initiative is inclusive and climate-resilient, aimed at reducing construction time, providing structural integrity, and ensuring affordability.”

The project will incorporate two types of conventional homes: one featuring precast panel walls and the other utilizing light steel frames with panels. Both designs are intended to be sustainable and durable for families, showcasing practical and scalable housing solutions for potential adoption across the country.

To ensure the efficient delivery of these homes, multiple contractors will engage in constructing the houses across key subdivisions, including Tavakubu in Lautoka, Tacirua in Suva, and Davuilevu in Nausori. Moreover, the Housing Authority plans to develop an additional 400 residential lots in various locations over the next two years.

The government’s efforts also include the introduction of row housing options to enhance housing diversity and affordability. Minister Nalumisa expressed the government’s aspiration to make homeownership more achievable for more Fijians, emphasizing growth that is inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.

This model homes initiative aligns with previous plans announced by the Housing Authority, aiming to address pressing housing needs, boost homeownership prospects, and enhance living conditions for the populace. The government’s commitment to diverse housing solutions presents a hopeful outlook for Fijians seeking affordable living arrangements.

Overall, as these developments take place, there is optimism that they will improve access to quality housing and contribute positively to the overall living standards in Fiji.
