Building a Future: Fiji’s Path to Climate-Resilient Housing

Recognizing Fiji’s susceptibility to climate change, prioritizing climate-resilient housing is crucial. Alitiana Yabakivitu, the principal policy officer at the Housing Ministry, emphasized this during a public consultation for the National Housing Policy in Lautoka on Monday.

She highlighted the necessity for sustainable housing models that enhance energy efficiency, reduce waste, and lower carbon emissions. “By adopting these practices, we can mitigate climate change impacts and reduce our ecological footprint, allowing our housing sector to prosper without harming the environment,” Ms. Yabakivitu stated.

She added that the journey toward a more effective housing sector relies on the input of residents, community leaders, stakeholders, and advocates present at the consultation. “Your voice is essential, and your insights are invaluable as we work to identify and address the challenges within our housing sector.”

Ms. Yabakivitu noted that the government’s commitment to transforming the housing sector aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal of fostering sustainable, safe, inclusive, and resilient cities and communities. “This commitment reflects the government’s priority to enhance the quality of life for Fijians by improving access to essential services and infrastructure, as well as developing a housing sector resilient to climate change.”

The national housing policy aims to ensure that all Fijian households can access safe, affordable, and quality housing. She stressed that the ongoing consultations are not merely about creating a policy; rather, they aim to build a future where everyone has the equal opportunity to thrive in a place they can truly call home.

“Your valuable insights will guide our approach and drive the success of our housing initiatives.”
