Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad has emphasized the urgent need for the prompt and efficient implementation of the 2025–2026 National Budget. Speaking during post-budget consultations in Nadi and Lautoka, he expressed concerns that any delays could jeopardize the government’s efforts to enhance public services and rebuild citizens’ trust.
Prasad underscored that the budget transcends mere financial figures; it represents a strategic plan aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public safety. He urged civil servants to take lead roles in executing these plans, reiterating that timely action is crucial for realizing the envisioned improvements.
Central to the budget is the continuation of VAT exemptions on 22 essential goods, support for vulnerable households, and increased funding in critical sectors such as health, infrastructure, and law enforcement. A notable allocation includes $10 million dedicated to combating HIV and $40 million earmarked for expanding police services. He also reiterated the importance of fast-tracking essential projects like the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project and the establishment of a new national hospital.
The emphasis on community engagement and stakeholder awareness in the budget’s structure aims to ensure practical outcomes from every dollar spent. Prasad believes that delivering the budget effectively and with discipline is essential for the public to witness tangible positive change.
The collaborative approach, building on previous engagement strategies, reflects a commitment to inclusivity in governance. As seen in past budgets, prioritizing citizen feedback has led to critical improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, indicating a promising trajectory towards uplifting living standards in Fiji. This progressive outlook signals a robust framework for fostering social welfare and economic growth.
With the budget presentation approaching, there is a sense of optimism that these financial plans will not only address immediate needs but will also lay the foundation for sustained development in the years to come. Through efficient implementation and stakeholder cooperation, the government is aiming to engender confidence and enhance the quality of life for all Fijians.
