Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced that the government is attentively considering public demands for an increase in social welfare allowances as it prepares for the national budget. Speaking about the ongoing budget consultations, Prasad emphasized the government’s commitment to listening to citizens and acknowledged the valuable feedback received from the public.

“We have listened very carefully,” stated Prasad, stressing that while the government may not be able to fulfill every request, many constructive suggestions are on the table for consideration in this budget and future planning. He commended the active participation from a diverse range of stakeholders, including ordinary people, professional bodies, and businesses, in the consultation process.

Prasad noted the success of past budgets, which have already seen notable improvements in the minimum wage and enhanced support for various sectors, including agriculture and social welfare initiatives. He highlighted that the government remains focused on responsible fiscal management while addressing pressing socio-economic challenges such as rising living costs and improving infrastructure.

The upcoming budget is scheduled for June 27, and Prasad expressed optimism about the potential for positive developments. This inclusive approach to budgeting not only empowers citizens but also fosters collaboration between the government and the populace, ultimately aiming for a more responsive governance structure that better serves the needs of all Fijians. The proactive engagement lays a hopeful foundation for economic progress, ensuring that budgetary decisions reflect the collective aspirations of the community.
