Lands and Mineral Resources Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has criticized Opposition Members of Parliament for what he describes as grandstanding during the budget discussions without providing concrete alternatives for the 2025-2026 budget. He dismissed the Opposition’s comments about the budget being “lazy,” “lollipop,” and “candy,” characterizing them as unhelpful and lacking in substance.

Vosarogo emphasized the need for the Opposition to present tangible solutions rather than merely denouncing the current government’s budget. He stated that their critique showed little understanding or leadership, urging them to reflect on their previous budget performances while in power.

He highlighted three main themes from the Opposition’s remarks throughout the week: condemnation of the vandalism at the Samabula temple, congratulations for a recent installation at Tubou, and ongoing negative commentary about the budget. Vosarogo urged his counterparts to join together in voicing unity over moral issues like the destruction of a place of worship, rather than focusing solely on political critique.

The responses from the Opposition, particularly from Members like Praveen Bala and Ketan Lal, parallel Vosarogo’s standings. These politicians have argued that the current budget lacks the necessary focus on long-term economic challenges, emphasizing rising living costs and the need for more substantial policy measures. Bala, for instance, has called the budget a “lollipop” solution that fails to address deeper issues, while others have echoed similar sentiments about a disconnect between government spending and the realities faced by ordinary Fijians.

Despite the contentious debate, there’s a sense of hope that this dialogue may spur constructive changes that better align government fiscal policies with the actual needs of the population, promoting a more stable economic future for Fiji. The focus on addressing real concerns raised during these discussions could pave the way for better budgetary practices that reflect the voices of everyday citizens.
