BSP completes dedicated medicine storeroom at Nayavu Nursing Station, boosting rural care

BSP Financial Group (Fiji) Pte Ltd has completed construction of a dedicated storeroom for essential medicines at Nayavu Nursing Station in Tailevu. The new facility expands the nursing station’s pharmaceutical storage capacity and aims to ensure a more reliable and timely supply of medication for the community it serves.

BSP country head Haroon Ali said the upgrade supports the Ministry of Health’s push for equitable healthcare and reflects the bank’s commitment to community wellbeing: “We are confident that enhancing the pharmaceutical storage capacity at this rural health facility will ensure the timely delivery and consistent supply of essential medicines to patients.”

The project responded to growing demand: the nursing station now serves a population exceeding 4,000 residents. Works included construction of the dedicated storeroom as well as internal renovations to shelving and cabinet storage. BSP staff and their families volunteered alongside contractors to complete the work on-site.

Nayavu Nursing Station’s medical officer-in-charge, Dr Harieta Atalifo, welcomed the upgrade, noting that a secure, dedicated space to store medicines strengthens the facility’s ability to maintain supplies and deliver care without delays — a critical benefit in rural settings.

This initiative forms part of BSP’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility program, which invests in health, education and environmental projects across Fiji. BSP has previously supported other community projects, including refurbishments at the Valelevu HART nursing home and infrastructure upgrades at Koroqaqa Primary School, with staff volunteering their time on many of these efforts.

Commentary and context
– Practical impact: Dedicated, secure medicine storage helps improve stock management, reduces the risk of shortages and spoilage, and supports faster dispensing to patients — all of which can lead to better health outcomes in remote communities.
– Community engagement: BSP’s use of staff volunteers reinforces community ownership and can speed project delivery while fostering stronger ties between the bank and local residents.
– Policy alignment: By targeting pharmaceutical storage capacity at a rural facility, this project complements national efforts to improve equitable access to healthcare services.

Short summary
BSP has finished a new storeroom and internal shelving upgrades at Nayavu Nursing Station to strengthen medicine storage for over 4,000 residents. The project, featuring volunteer support from BSP staff and families, is part of the bank’s wider CSR focus on health, education and the environment.

Hopeful note
Improvements like this — practical, locally targeted and delivered with community involvement — are small but meaningful steps toward more reliable rural health services and greater equity in access to essential medicines.
