Former rugby player Bryce Heem, who has had an illustrious career with the Blues, All Blacks Sevens, and as a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, has announced his retirement from the sport. The 36-year-old winger/centre enjoyed a notable career since debuting in 2010, including 42 games with the Blues, where he was part of the title-winning side in 2024. Unfortunately, a wrist injury sidelined him for the entire 2025 Super Rugby season.

Reflecting on his journey, Heem expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships he developed throughout his career. “It’s been an incredible ride,” he stated, emphasizing the memories created and the support from his wife Jocelyn, whom he credited as his rock. He noted that while it feels strange to watch the Blues from the sidelines this season, he doesn’t miss the grueling training sessions.

Heem also acknowledged the contributions of the coaches, medical staff, and everyone involved throughout his rugby journey, indicating a deep sense of appreciation for those who supported him.

As he transitions into a new phase in life as a mortgage broker, Heem’s story serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of sports and the personal connections forged along the way.

One can hope that Heem’s new career path will bring him as much fulfillment as his rugby career did, allowing him to continue making a positive impact in his community.
