A 21-year-old maritime student remains hospitalized after reportedly being assaulted by a police officer during a disturbance in Nausori early Sunday morning. Vilikesa Bari, in his final year at Fiji National University, was waiting for transportation with his cousin after celebrating a birthday with his mother when a nearby brawl began.

According to Mr. Bari, the situation escalated rapidly, with violence erupting unexpectedly. He recounted how he was struck in the face during the altercation, causing him to drop his phone, which led to panic among those present. Seeking to help, he directed his efforts toward the police officers on the scene, urging them to intervene. Unfortunately, the situation took a turn when a police officer allegedly mistook him for a participant in the brawl and forcibly escorted him to a police vehicle. Allegations from Mr. Bari suggest that during transport to the Nausori Police Station, he was struck in the head with a torch and further assaulted upon arrival.

Details of the incident from Mr. Bari’s hospital bed reveal he was punched, kicked, and dragged across the station floor. He claims the officer warned him not to lecture them on their duties. In a troubling development, after being treated at the Nausori Health Centre, Mr. Bari was allegedly approached by the same officer, who tried to offer him $500 to drop the allegations against him.

His mother, Una Qionimacawa, expressed her deep anguish at the events, emphasizing the disbelief and heartbreak she felt upon learning of her son’s injuries, while also condemning the officer’s alleged attempt to bribe her son. She has made a heartfelt plea to the authorities to take appropriate action regarding the incident.

Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, known for his stance against police brutality, has not yet commented on the allegations. However, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has ordered an immediate investigation into the assault claims. A police spokesperson emphasized the importance of officers adhering to the law, stating, “They are equally answerable to it.”

As the investigation unfolds, the public is reminded of the broader issues of police conduct brought to light by recent findings in the Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), which pointed out police brutality as a recurring concern.

This incident highlights the critical importance of transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies. As investigations progress, it offers a timely opportunity for the authorities to reaffirm their commitment to the protection of citizens’ rights and to restore public trust in policing practices.
