Minister of Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has affirmed that authorities will thoroughly investigate a case of alleged police brutality that occurred in Nausori over the weekend. Vilikesa Bari, a 21-year-old final-year maritime student at Fiji National University, was reportedly assaulted by a police officer, leading to his hospitalization. The injuries sustained in the incident include a broken jaw, which has made it difficult for him to eat.
In response to the situation, Minister Tikoduadua stated, “I’ve been informed about it, and we will investigate it fully.” He acknowledged that he was only recently made aware of the incident but assured the public that an investigation would take place.
During a visit to Mr. Bari at Wainibokasi Hospital, his family alleged that bribery was involved, claiming that the suspect approached Bari at around 4 a.m. on Sunday with an offer of $500 to remain silent about the assault.
The police have recognized that the actions of a minority of officers have negatively affected public trust in the institution. Acting Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sakeo Raikaci acknowledged that recent claims of abuse of authority and inadequate service have harmed community relations. He emphasized that the police are committed to rebuilding trust with the community and are implementing necessary steps to correct the issues that have diminished public confidence.
“We appreciate the ongoing support of the community as we strive to rectify the challenges we face,” ACP Raikaci commented. He reiterated that officers across the five policing divisions are dedicated to serving their communities in the best way possible.
This incident sheds light on the need for accountability and transparency within law enforcement. The commitment from government authorities and police leadership to handle the situation and restore public confidence is a positive step toward ensuring fair and respectful policing practices in the community.
As investigations proceed, it is hoped that justice will be served, fostering an environment of trust and safety for all citizens.
