A mother in Lautoka is calling for justice after her 15-year-old son was brutally attacked by a classmate in a school classroom, with the incident recorded and shared on social media. Zaima Khan, 43, reported that her son, a Year 9 student, was left with bruises and stomach pain after the assault, which witnesses say occurred last Wednesday in front of other students.

Khan expressed her concern for the safety of students, stating, “Today, it happened to my son, tomorrow it will happen to someone else’s son. I just want justice to prevail, and teachers should not leave students unattended in class.” Khan was initially notified by the school that her son was “in a big problem” but discovered upon her arrival that he had been the victim of the attack. She sought medical attention for him and filed a police report regarding the incident.

The young boy has since returned to school, but Khan noted that he appears withdrawn and distressed, displaying signs of depression following the altercation. She emphasized that police action is critical and shared her belief that without the viral video, there might not have been any response to her complaint. A police spokesperson confirmed that they have received the report regarding the incident and are currently investigating.

The school administration declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation. In light of this incident, the Ministry of Education is expected to release a statement shortly.

This incident is part of a larger trend of student violence in schools. An earlier report highlighted rising concerns over the safety within educational environments due to similar violent incidents being reported across the country. This calls for effective conflict resolution strategies and comprehensive support systems within schools to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

The growing outcry for justice and preventive measures underscores the community’s commitment to fostering a safe learning environment for future generations. Continued dialogues among parents, educators, and law enforcement are crucial to developing proactive strategies that address and prevent violence in schools.
