Ubayd Haider is currently recovering in the intensive care unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital following a tough fight against China’s Runqi Zhou for the IBO Asia Pacific Super Featherweight title at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last Saturday night.
Haider, originally named Nathan Singh, endured significant damage during the match, primarily focusing on defense as he absorbed numerous heavy body punches. Zhou, displaying relentless aggression, was able to capitalize on Haider’s defensive stance. In the ninth round, Haider was knocked down twice and failed to beat the count on the second fall. Subsequently, he collapsed on his way to the locker room and was promptly attended to by the ringside physician. He was first taken to Nadi Hospital and later transferred to Lautoka Hospital, where he remains under care.
Zhou commented on his strategy, explaining that his plan was straightforward: to consistently target Haider’s body and apply pressure to secure a late stoppage. “He (Haider) had too much smiling and not too much punching,” said Zhou, who is now the titleholder. He expressed his appreciation for Fiji, saying, “vinaka.”
Zhou’s trainer, Angelo Hyder, criticized Haider’s preparation for the fight, questioning the training and sparring arrangements. “I don’t know who is training him (Haider), I don’t know the level of sparring and how can he prepare for this guy,” Hyder stated. He emphasized that Runqi has access to numerous sparring partners, making it crucial for fighters aspiring to compete at the top level to train accordingly.
