The man charged with insulting Information Minister Lynda Tabuya on social media appeared in Suva Magistrate’s Court, showcasing visible bruises and swelling on his face. Lui Bale Vuibereta faced Magistrate Lisiate Fotofili, who permitted his lawyer’s request for him to be escorted to the Totogo Police Station to report his injuries.
The allegations against Mr. Vuibereta stem from a live TikTok video he reportedly posted on September 1 in Nadi, during which he allegedly used vulgar language intended to harm Ms. Tabuya’s reputation.
Both prosecution and defense lawyers concurred that the case should be escalated to the High Court due to the Magistrate’s Court lacking the necessary jurisdiction. Mr. Vuibereta is scheduled to appear in the High Court on February 13, where further proceedings will unfold regarding this matter.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about social media conduct and the implications of online behavior in the realm of public figures, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse in digital platforms.
