The Chinese Embassy recently held a welcoming reception for the Guadong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team, who visited Fiji to perform cataract surgeries at the CWM Eye Clinic. This event underscores the strong ties between Guadong, China, and Fiji, as highlighted by Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian. He emphasized how this relationship has fostered progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and education sectors in Fiji.
Ambassador Zhou noted the longstanding partnership, particularly since the establishment of a sister-city relationship between Guadong and Suva in 2011. This partnership has facilitated successful collaborations in various fields, including infrastructure projects like the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and the upgrading of Marist Brothers High School.
He also addressed the ongoing challenge of cataracts in Fiji, which has significantly impacted many families. The Bright Medical Team, known for their philanthropic efforts, has alleviated some of these burdens by providing free eye surgeries since 2013. They have restored the vision of over 200 patients across Fiji and other Pacific Islands, earning them the heartfelt nickname “Angels of Light” from grateful communities.
Hung Wenyong, a member of the Bright Medical Team, expressed their gratitude for being able to treat 50 patients, 47 of whom had cataracts during this trip. He reaffirmed that, while their primary aim was to address eye health, strengthening Fiji-China relations was equally valuable.
