Bright Journey Delivers Free Cataract Surgeries in Fiji, Restoring Sight

For many Fijians, the loss of eyesight signifies more than just a medical issue; it impacts their independence, employment, and family connections. However, the Bright Journey initiative is working to change this narrative, impacting lives through eye surgeries one at a time.

During a recent session in Parliament, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, shared how the program has been pivotal in transforming communities by providing free cataract surgeries while also equipping local specialists with the necessary skills to improve long-term eye care in Fiji. “The Bright Journey programme provides free, high-quality cataract surgeries and also builds the skills of our own eye specialists here in Fiji,” he emphasized.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the Bright Journey team, comprised of ophthalmologists and nurses from China’s Guangdong Province, has successfully aided over 300 Fijians in regaining their sight. In the previous month alone, the team completed 111 cataract surgeries. “As of November 2025, the Bright Journey team has delivered over 300 free cataract surgeries for Fijians,” he stated.

One particularly touching moment occurred just weeks ago, when a 69-year-old grandmother emerged from surgery with restored vision for the first time in years, allowing her to reunite her with her granddaughter. “We witnessed a 69-year-old grandmother walk out of the theatre with her sight restored, able to see her granddaughter again,” Dr. Lalabalavu recounted.

As Fiji addresses its cataract surgery backlog, the Bright Journey programme highlights the profound impact of collaborative efforts in enhancing individual lives and fostering hope throughout communities. The ongoing commitment to restoring sight not only helps in reducing medical issues but also plays a vital role in reuniting families and empowering individuals.
