VAROMUE Wilson, 69, received life-changing cataract surgery yesterday, thanks to the “Bright Journey” Medical Mission from Guangdong Province, China. This week-long program aims to provide free cataract surgeries in Fiji, celebrating ten years of impactful service coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji.
Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye, diminishing vision and affecting daily life. After noticing her eyesight deteriorating around July, Ms. Wilson and her family sought medical help at a local clinic, where they learned about the visiting Chinese medical team. “We had no idea we would be chosen to take part in this surgery. The Lord chose it,” she reflected, expressing heartfelt gratitude for the restoration of her sight. With the advanced surgical techniques utilized by the team, Ms. Wilson’s vision improved within minutes, and she eagerly anticipates seeing her granddaughter, Daisy, after recovery.
The Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, endorsed the initiative, emphasizing the significance of the visiting team’s expertise, which is currently lacking in Fiji. He encouraged citizens to utilize the free clinic available at the Pacific Eye Institute in Suva, where the Bright Journey team will provide services.
