Bright Journey Brings Free Cataract Surgeries to Fiji

A dedicated team of eye specialists from China’s Guangdong Province has returned to Fiji to continue their mission of restoring sight through the “Bright Journey” cataract surgery initiative. This program, which offers free cataract surgeries, is currently taking place at the Pacific Eye Institute in Suva, benefitting patients from throughout Fiji, including those from remote outer islands.

Among the first patients to undergo surgery today was 69-year-old Varamua Marana Wilson from Rotuma. Wilson, who experienced a sharp decline in his vision earlier this year, expressed his eagerness to regain sight: “It started blurry around July and August before I almost went completely blind… Once my vision comes back, I just want to see my five-year-old granddaughter, Stacy.” He emphasized the importance of seeking timely medical help, encouraging others not to wait until it is too late.

This year’s campaign marks a decade of fruitful collaboration between Fiji’s Ministry of Health and the Guangdong Province. Since its inception in 2015, the “Bright Journey” program has successfully provided thousands of free eye surgeries, profoundly impacting the lives of many Fijians.

The ongoing mission underscores the vital importance of eye health and timely medical intervention, as highlighted by the positive experiences of prior patients. For instance, Kuber Singh, a retired school principal who received cataract surgery through the program last year, shared how it transformed his life, allowing him to enjoy activities without glasses. His wife, Kusum Singh, echoed his sentiments after her recent surgery, stating that improved vision will ease her responsibilities at home, particularly in caring for their grandchildren.

Similar stories have emerged from the many patients treated during this initiative, showcasing the life-changing potential of accessible healthcare. The work done by the Guangdong Bright Journey medical team not only restores vision but also revitalizes communities by enabling individuals to return to their daily activities and responsibilities.

As the program continues, anticipation builds for the remaining scheduled surgeries, which promise to bring hope and renewed independence to many families. This collaborative effort highlights the power of medical assistance and international partnerships in transforming lives and fostering a brighter future for those in need.
