Bridging the Rugby Gap: Flying Fijians Coach Speaks Out

There exists a significant disparity in conditioning and pace of play between athletes participating in the Skipper Cup and those in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. This perspective was articulated by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne during an interview with SUNsports. He explained the reasoning behind the selection of Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua as the sole local-based provincial player in the Flying Fijians squad for the Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne emphasized the need for a fully professional rugby environment, noting the importance of consistent training routines. He stated, “At this early stage, we have a complete professional rugby setup, including morning training sessions.”

He highlighted the ongoing challenge of ensuring that Skipper Cup teams improve their fitness and overall performance to meet the desired standards of rugby. Byrne expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions.

The coach mentioned that insights from the players involved in the Skipper Cup this year have provided valuable data regarding energy levels and performance metrics. He is keen on identifying promising talents for the Fijians Warriors program, with hopes that these players will eventually be integrated into the Drua franchise.

In addition, the inclusion of France-based Adrea Cocagi in the Flying Fijians squad aims to enhance the depth of talent in the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, who has been a key player for Castres in the Top 14 this season, is recognized for his strong running capabilities in the midfield.

Byrne is looking forward to Cocagi’s contributions in the upcoming campaign, noting his potential as a powerful ball carrier, which will be essential in matches against other Pacific teams.

Hooker Zuriel Togiatama will not be part of the squad due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. Byrne noted that Simione Kuruvoli has been consistently active since the World Cup, deserving a break to spend time with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad will report to camp tomorrow.
