There is a significant disparity in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those participating in the Super Rugby Pacific competition, according to Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, Byrne explained the limited representation of local-based players in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, noting that Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua is the sole provincial player selected.
Byrne highlighted the importance of developing a professional rugby environment, stating, “At this early stage, we got a full professional rugby setup, getting up in the morning, training, and working towards rugby.” He emphasized the need for Skipper Cup teams to enhance their fitness levels to compete effectively at a higher standard.
The coach expressed eagerness to collaborate with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions. “We received valuable scientific feedback from our players involved in the Skipper Cup this year concerning energy and performance metrics,” he added, noting the potential for talented players to transition into the Fijian Warriors program.
Byrne expressed hope that skillful players from the Skipper Cup could advance to the Drua franchise club. “These players have the opportunity to propel themselves into our team through the Warriors,” he stated.
In addition, France-based Adrea Cocagi has been included in the Flying Fijians squad to bolster the second-five eighth position. Cocagi is recognized for his strong running ability and has been a key player for Castres in the Top 14 competition. “Cocagi is a strong running player in the midfield, and we look forward to his contributions in the campaign,” Byrne said.
Cocagi has previously played two Test matches for the Flying Fijians under former head coach Vern Cotter. Originating from Nuku Village in Serua, he played for Lomary Secondary School before joining the NRL club Newcastle Knights. Byrne noted that the upcoming PNC campaign would serve as an opportunity to assess players, highlighting Cocagi’s qualities as essential for facing Pacific rivals.
Byrne also mentioned that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was not selected due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. “I’ve spoken with Simione Kuruvoli, who has been active since the World Cup, and I think he deserves a break to spend time with his family,” he said.
The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp tomorrow.
