Bridging the Gap: Flying Fijians Set to Enhance Local Rugby Talent

There is a noticeable disparity in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those competing in the Super Rugby Pacific, according to Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. During an interview with SUNsports, Byrne addressed the inclusion of Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua as the sole local player selected for the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne explained that the professional rugby environment demands a commitment to rigorous training schedules, adding, “One of our challenges moving forward is to ensure that our Skipper Cup teams are working hard towards the level of rugby and the fitness level that we want.” He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions.

The coach mentioned that recent scientific feedback from Skipper Cup players revealed insights into their energy levels and performance metrics. He is eager to integrate promising talent from the Skipper Cup into the Fijians Warriors program, hoping that some players may eventually secure positions in the Drua franchise club.

In addition, Byrne noted the selection of France-based Adrea Cocagi to enhance the depth of the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, who has been performing well with Castres in the Top 14, is recognized as a strong addition to the midfield. “Cocagi is a good strong running player in the midfield,” Byrne said, looking forward to his contributions in the upcoming campaign.

Cocagi has already earned two Test caps as part of the Flying Fijians under head coach Vern Cotter. He hails from Nuku Village in Serua and previously played for Lomary Secondary School before joining the NRL’s Newcastle Knights.

Byrne highlighted the Pacific Nations Cup as an ideal opportunity to assess players, emphasizing the need for strong ball carriers against their Pacific rivals. Additionally, he revealed that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was not selected due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. “I think he deserves a break and he’ll be spending some time with his family,” Byrne noted.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp tomorrow.
