Bridging the Gap: Flying Fijians Face Challenges Ahead of Pacific Nations Cup

There is a significant disparity in fitness and game pace between players participating in the Skipper Cup and those in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. This was highlighted by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne in an interview regarding the selection of Kavaia Tagivetaua, a local-based hooker from Naitasiri, who is the only provincial player included in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne noted that the level of professionalism expected includes a dedicated routine of training and preparation. He emphasized that one of the main objectives is to enhance the performance and fitness levels of teams competing in the Skipper Cup.

Looking ahead, Byrne expressed optimism about collaborating with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions. He mentioned that insights gained from players in this year’s Skipper Cup, particularly regarding performance metrics, indicate the presence of real talent that could be developed within the Fijian Warriors programme.

Additionally, Byrne highlighted the recruitment potential of skilled players from the Skipper Cup for the Drua franchise club, suggesting they could earn their place through the Warriors pathway.

In terms of strengthening the second-five eighth position, France-based Adrea Cocagi has been selected to join the Flying Fijians squad. Cocagi, who has made a mark in the Top 14 competition with Castres, is known for his strong running ability in the midfield. Byrne is eager for him to make an impact during the campaign, as Cocagi has previously appeared in two Test matches for Fiji.

Byrne also shared that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was omitted from the squad due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. He noted that Simione Kuruvoli has been a consistent player since the World Cup and deserves time with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp tomorrow.
