There is a significant disparity in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those competing in the Super Rugby Pacific. This assessment comes from Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne, who spoke with SUNsports about the selection process for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, specifically mentioning that Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua is the only locally-based player included in the squad.

Byrne explained that the current set-up allows players to train professionally, emphasizing the need for improvement in the fitness levels of Skipper Cup teams to meet the standards of higher-level rugby. He expressed intent to collaborate with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions.

The coach noted that there have been positive scientific assessments from players involved in this year’s Skipper Cup regarding their energy levels, indicating the presence of several talented individuals who may advance to the Fijian Warriors program. He is optimistic that these players could also move up to the Drua franchise club.

In a separate development, the inclusion of France-based Adrea Cocagi aims to strengthen the second-five eighth position in the Flying Fijians squad. Cocagi, who plays for Castres in the Top 14, is recognized for his strong running style. Byrne looks forward to integrating him into the team for the upcoming campaign.

Cocagi has previously represented the Flying Fijians in two Test matches and comes from Nuku Village in Serua. He played for Lomary Secondary School before joining the National Rugby League club Newcastle Knights. Byrne believes the Pacific Nations Cup will serve as an essential platform to evaluate players and highlighted the need for strong ball-carrying abilities against their Pacific rivals.

Additionally, hooker Zuriel Togiatama was not selected for familial reasons, with Byrne mentioning his discussions with Simione Kuruvoli, who has been actively playing since the World Cup and now deserves time with his family. The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp tomorrow.
