Bridging the Gap: Fiji’s Rugby Aspirations Amid Local Challenges

There is a significant gap in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those in the Super Rugby Pacific competition, according to Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, he explained that this disparity is one reason Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua is the sole local-based provincial player included in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne emphasized that at this stage, a fully professional rugby setup is essential, involving training and daily commitments to rugby. He noted, “One of our challenges moving forward is to ensure that our Skipper Cup teams are working hard towards the level of rugby and the fitness level that we want.”

The coach expressed eagerness to collaborate with Skipper Cup coaches to help narrow the difference between the two competitions. He also mentioned receiving valuable scientific feedback from players in the Skipper Cup regarding their energy levels and performance metrics.

Byrne highlighted the potential of the talented players from the Skipper Cup, stating that they could be integrated into the Fijian Warriors program and possibly advance to the Drua franchise club.

In addressing squad depth, Byrne selected France-based Adrea Cocagi to bolster the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, a prominent player for Castres in this season’s Top 14, is recognized for his strong running ability in the midfield. Byrne looks forward to his contributions during the upcoming campaign.

Cocagi has represented the Flying Fijians in two Test matches under previous head coach Vern Cotter. Originally from Nuku Village in Serua, he played for Lomary Secondary School before joining the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League.

Byrne stated that the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) would serve as an opportunity to assess player capabilities, adding that, “Cocagi is a good strong running ball-carrying player, which is what we’re going to need when we take on our Pacific brothers.”

Additionally, Byrne confirmed that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was unavailable for selection due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand. He acknowledged Simione Kuruvoli’s consistent performance since the World Cup and mentioned that Kuruvoli deserves time off to be with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is scheduled to report to camp tomorrow.
