Bridging the Gap: Fijian Rugby’s Challenge Ahead

The disparity in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those competing in the Super Rugby Pacific is significant, according to Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. In an interview with SUNsports, he explained that Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua was the sole local-based player included in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne emphasized the need for a fully professional rugby environment, outlining the importance of consistent training routines akin to those in professional setups. He expressed his intention to collaborate with Skipper Cup coaches to elevate the training standards and fitness levels required for players.

He also noted that feedback from players in this year’s Skipper Cup highlighted the potential for talented athletes to transition into higher levels of competition. Byrne is keen on integrating these players into the Fijian Warriors program and ultimately into the Drua franchise club.

In another development, the inclusion of France-based Adrea Cocagi in the Flying Fijians squad aims to strengthen the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, who has been a standout player for Castres in the Top 14 league, is recognized by Byrne for his powerful running style and ball-carrying abilities. He has already played two Test matches for the Flying Fijians.

Byrne also mentioned that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was not selected due to family matters in Auckland, New Zealand, and that he has had a conversation with Simione Kuruvoli about taking a break to spend time with his family. The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp shortly.
