The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a $199.5 million initiative aimed at replacing critical bridges on Fiji’s main island, marking a significant investment in the country’s infrastructure. The project, known as the Critical Bridges Resilience Project, is designed to enhance domestic transportation connectivity.
Funding for the project comprises a $120 million concessional loan from ADB and a $14.5 million grant from the Asian Development Fund (ADF), which focuses on disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. The Fiji Government will also contribute $15 million in counterpart financing.
According to Aaron Batten, regional director for ADB’s Pacific Subregional Office, the construction of four bridges in Lami, Medraukutu, Sabeto, and Viseisei will significantly improve connections to markets, educational institutions, and healthcare services. The ADF grant will specifically address the resilience of the bridges against disasters, such as earthquakes and soil liquefaction, ensuring they meet enhanced safety standards.
The project also includes an assessment of social and gender vulnerabilities within the transport sector and the development of an investment road map. The new bridges will feature sidewalks and enhanced road safety elements, catering to all users. Additionally, the initiative aims to bolster the Fiji Roads Authority’s capacity in asset management and formulating gender-responsive policies.
This ambitious project is set to be further co-financed by the World Bank with a proposed $50 million loan, underscoring a collaborative effort towards a more resilient infrastructure in Fiji.
