Students and teachers at Udu District School have recently connected to the internet for the first time, thanks to the successful installation of Starlink satellite internet by the Ministry of Education. During the inauguration, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted this development as a significant milestone that opens up new avenues for online learning, communication, and access to educational resources that were previously unavailable.
Minister Radrodro also officiated a groundbreaking ceremony for new teachers’ quarters, part of a $40,000 building grant aimed at improving housing for teachers in non-government schools. He emphasized that enhancing living conditions will aid in retaining qualified teachers in the remote area.
This initiative mirrors similar efforts across Fiji aimed at bridging the digital divide in education. Recently, six rural schools in Viti Levu were equipped with high-speed internet through Starlink technology, enabling students to participate in virtual learning and utilize digital educational tools.
Such projects not only enhance educational opportunities but also resonate with global initiatives to connect every school to the internet by 2030, promoting equitable access to quality education. As these developments unfold, they foster hope for a brighter educational future, particularly in remote communities where technology can significantly expand learning possibilities.
