Bridging Homelessness and Recovery: A Vision for Change

ACCOMMODATION for street dwellers should be prioritized alongside skills-based training initiatives, emphasized Edwina Biyau, founder of Daulomani Safehome. Biyau’s comments came during a recent two-day training aimed at equipping counselors to support youth battling substance abuse. This training, organized by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection in partnership with UNICEF, took place at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka.

Biyau pointed out that without stable housing, the effectiveness of such training could be significantly diminished. “I’ve seen after that training that the same young people are lying on the street or at the seaside,” she noted, advocating for the need to establish adequate facilities where these individuals can receive support and continue their development.

This feedback aligns closely with recent initiatives in Fiji, such as a training program at Fiji National University for another group of street dwellers, where they are set to gain skills that could enhance their employability. Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has been vocal about the government’s commitment to supporting these individuals, encouraging them to see their potential as future community leaders.

Additionally, the government is working toward the establishment of safe houses to provide stable living conditions for these vulnerable populations, reinforcing the message that systemic support is critical for long-term recovery and reintegration into society. Community collaboration, evidenced through ongoing support from various organizations, reflects a hopeful commitment to addressing homelessness and substance abuse issues.

Overall, the proactive steps being taken reflect a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive solutions that not only provide immediate assistance but also empower individuals to rebuild their lives. As these programs unfold, they offer a promising pathway toward brighter futures for these young individuals.
