Bridging Divides: Fiji’s Path to Lasting Peace

Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has emphasized the importance of addressing the underlying causes of division in the country to foster a peaceful society. Speaking at the Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light Summit in Suva on Saturday, Chaudhry highlighted the necessity of resolving the grievances stemming from the coup era to avoid future unrest.

He stated that establishing a truth and reconciliation mechanism is crucial for achieving lasting peace. “The violence, breakdown in law and order, and race-based discriminatory policies following the coups have led to significant ethnic division and a loss of confidence in the post-coup government,” he remarked.

According to Chaudhry, it is essential for every individual, regardless of their background, to feel empowered to contribute to a peaceful society, a goal he believes has not yet been achieved in Fiji. He pointed out that despite the substantial setbacks caused by the coups, mechanisms to address the root causes of division and ethnic distrust have not been established.

Chaudhry acknowledged the Government’s commitment to United Nations multinational projects that promote peace, but stressed that similar initiatives must be pursued domestically. “We have not allocated resources for creating institutions or frameworks to address the impacts of the coup and to unite different ethnic groups,” he said.

He called for the urgent establishment of a truth and reconciliation process to uncover the historical truths related to the coups, not as a means of blame, but to confront the past and foster healing. “Engaging in honest dialogue while strengthening our democratic institutions is essential to ensure marginalized voices are heard,” he added.

Chaudhry asserted that Fiji’s diversity is a strength that should not be exploited for conflict. “To achieve lasting peace, we must enforce unity and belonging, address social inequalities, and promote inclusivity across all communities,” he stated. He concluded by calling for fair, transparent policies that serve the common good, emphasizing that genuine peace cannot exist without justice, respect, and trust.
