The dialogue forum titled “Development in Indonesia: Lessons Learned from Papua and for the Pacific” was successfully conducted in Suva, Fiji. The primary objective of this event was to emphasize the development achievements in the Indonesian province of Papua, celebrate its rich local culture, and highlight the significant advancements realized in this easternmost part of Indonesia.
Prominent speakers from Papua shared their valuable insights on the region’s social and economic progress during the forum. A diverse audience attended, including church leaders, community group representatives, members of the Indonesia Scholarship Fiji Alumni, Fijian students, government officials, local NGOs, Indonesian students in Fiji, think tanks, media, and representatives from the Fiji-Indonesia Friendship Association.
Indonesia’s Ambassador to Fiji, Dupito Simamora, noted that the forum aimed to foster engaging discussions and encourage fresh perspectives on sustainable development models that could be applicable to both Papua and the Fiji islands. Sokovoli Ordovakavula, a civil engineer and president of the Indonesia Scholarship Fiji Alumni, pointed out that many of Indonesia’s development initiatives are particularly unique to Papua, suggesting the exploration of these initiatives for their potential application in Fiji.
The Acting Director for Assets and Infrastructure Services at the Ministry of Education, Serupepeli Udre, discussed previous and prospective bilateral collaborations between the Indonesian and Fijian governments, which could lead to further advancements in Fiji’s national development plans.
This event signifies a commitment to fostering international dialogue and collaboration that can lead to sustainable development in both Indonesia and Fiji, showcasing the potential for shared growth and learning between the regions.
