Construction has officially begun on a $1.3 million suspension bridge in Lomanikoro, Bua, aimed at benefiting over 800 residents from nearby villages including Dalomo, Bua Lomanikoro, and Tiliva. This project marks an important development for the community, as it is expected to significantly improve access to vital services such as markets, schools, and healthcare.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, emphasized the bridge’s significance, stating, “This bridge is more than just steel and concrete – it is a symbol of connection and opportunity for the people who will rely on it.” This sentiment reflects a broader commitment by the government to improve rural infrastructure and connect communities that have long faced challenges in accessing essential services.
The project includes building towers on either side of the river, with the first phase expected to be completed by July 2025, followed by the second phase which is scheduled to begin in August and conclude in December. Previously, residents in the area had to navigate dangerous river crossings, particularly affecting students’ ability to travel safely to school.
Similar infrastructure developments across Fiji, like the recently inaugurated Naseyani Bridge, demonstrate the transformative impact of such projects. The Naseyani Bridge has notably improved safety and connectivity for its community, highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure for rural populations.
With the completion of the Lomanikoro bridge, the hope is that it will become a beacon of progress in the region, fostering greater accessibility and opportunities for development. The project serves as a vital reminder of how infrastructure can profoundly influence the quality of life for rural communities, offering them a brighter and safer future.
