The residents of Saliadrau Village in Namosi are overjoyed following a groundbreaking ceremony for a new bridge, held on Saturday, February 8, 2025. For years, villagers faced dangerous crossings of a river using floating tubes and bilibili, especially perilous during rainy seasons when flooding completely isolated them from schools, markets, and critical services.
Ro Ela Kaloumaira, a long-time villager, shared her heartfelt gratitude for the project, stating, “This bridge isn’t just for us—it’s for our grandchildren and generations to come.” The planned 60-meter suspension footbridge, with funding from the Japanese Embassy at FJ$248,000 and the Government of Fiji contributing FJ$370,000, will greatly enhance safety for community members, including schoolchildren, pregnant women, and farmers.
Minister Sakiasi Ditoka highlighted the bridge’s significance in improving access to healthcare, stimulating economic growth, and facilitating safer routes to essential services. Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii also commended the villagers’ resilience and determination, noting that their commitment to bettering their lives inspired the project’s initiation.
This bridge stands as a beacon of hope and advancement for the future of Saliadrau Village, showcasing the potential for infrastructure development to enhance community life.
In summary, the bridge not only represents a vital improvement in safety and accessibility but also embodies the community’s aspirations for progress and betterment, which will positively impact generations to come.
