A former customer service officer with the Land Transport Authority, Losevati Muailasekula Cokanasiga, has been released on a $1,000 non-cash bail after facing charges of accepting a bribe exceeding $11,000. Cokanasiga appeared for the first time at the Nasinu Magistrate Court on Tuesday, where she was formally charged with bribery.
According to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Cokanasiga allegedly received $11,117.28 from Ponipate Sevou as inducement for actions she undertook in her official capacity. The alleged bribery occurred between May 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022.
Prosecution lawyer Lanieta More confirmed that the first phase of disclosures has been provided to the defendant. During the court session, the Magistrate granted bail but imposed strict conditions. These include restrictions on re-offending, preventing interference with prosecution witnesses, and the surrender of all travel documents. Cokanasiga must also report monthly to the FICAC office, commencing on May 9, 2025, with her case adjourned until May 14.
This incident is part of ongoing efforts by FICAC to address corruption within public service roles. Similar cases have recently emerged, underscoring a broader commitment to ethical standards and accountability in governmental operations. For instance, recent cases involving public servants accused of financial misconduct demonstrate the judiciary’s determination to uphold integrity in public service.
The legal proceedings give hope for enhanced transparency and accountability, reinforcing the importance of ethical conduct among officials and ultimately working to restore public trust in governmental institutions.
